  • If you live in a climate that requires your vehicle to have a block heater, research shows you only need 3 hours to ensure reliable starts.  Remember a block heater will run around 600 watts.  There are electrical cords designed to only operate below certain temperatures, approximately 2oC (35oF).  Combine that with a timer and you have done a good job at reducing your energy use.
  • Programmable thermostats have been recommended for a long time now and really everyone should have one.  Depending on the type of programmable thermostat, fuel prices, and lower temperatures at night for 8 hours, payback can be as fast as 5 months.
